Jaap Kiel holds an MSc in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Twente, The Netherlands, and completed a PhD study at the same university on simultaneous SOx/NOx removal from flue gases of coal fired boilers.
In 1989, he joined the Energy research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN) and became involved in the execution, and later organisation and management of a broad range of R&D projects in the field of thermal conversion of solid fuels.
After the merger of ECN with TNO in 2018, Jaap Kiel currently is the manager of the Biomass Programme at TNO Energy Transition, covering R&D on biobased fuels and chemical feedstock production through various thermochemical biomass conversion technologies including dry and wet torrefaction, combustion and gasification, and biorefinery concepts for lignocellulosic biomass and seaweed. In addition, in the TNO-VITO shared research centre on bioaromatics production, BIORIZON, he manages the activities on bio-aromatics production via thermochemical pathways. Furthermore, he is the coordinator of the subprogramme on Thermochemical Processing within EERA Bioenergy, an alliance of European energy R&D centres, and he is a board member of the Dutch Platform BioEconomy. In IEA Task 44, he is the representative for the Netherlands.
